Most of us don’t consider our skin as an organ, but it our largest visible organ and it has many functions. The skin protects against diseases and infections, regulates our body temperature, and performs metabolic functions. Skin contains millions of nerve endings which enable us to feel pain, cold, heat and touch. It also constantly renews itself by shedding the top layer, allowing new skin to appear. You should practice good skin care to protect this vital organ.
Your skin type is usually the same as one of your parents. You may have smooth clear skin, or have problems with dry, sensitive or oily skin. Whatever skin type you have, you need to look after it. Knowing your skin type is very important so that you do not use incorrect products.
Skin types fall into four categories: dry, oily, sensitive, or an amalgamation of all. Dry skin looks tight is prone to scaling, flaking or itching, and it will soon shows fine wrinkles. With the right care, you can keep dry skin well hydrated.

Oily skin is often shiny with large pores that can be prone to breakouts because the sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than needed. Oily skin must be cleansed with warm water and soap to prevent the pores from becoming clogged. Use oil-free moisturizers to prevent oiliness during the day.
If you have sensitive skin, it will react quickly to both heat and cold, and it will also be prone to allergic reactions. Temperature changes, certain detergents and cosmetics can all cause irritation, leaving the skin red and inflamed. To cleanse sensitive skin, choose products that do not contain perfumes or chemicals. It is best to consult to a skin specialist to advise you on the correct products to use.
The most common type of skin type is combination skin. If you have combination skin it will be dry on your cheeks and on the sides of your face, with an oily panel in the centre. You can use products for oily skin on the oily parts. For the rest of your face, use products to treat dry skin.
To keep skin healthy, it is recommended that you drink about 7 glasses of water every day. Eat healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, lean protein and fish. The use of certain supplements is also good for the skin. Your skin rejuvenates itself while you sleep, so make sure you get enough quality sleep.
