Yeast infections are one kind of infection you wouldn’t dare to have or even try. Once you have it, its not like your ordinary flu or measles because it just stays way, way longer and bothers and pesters you even more. Not to mention it is hard to get a cure for it, considering the fact that it is caused by a fungus (yeast is a type of fungus). And as we all know, fungal infections are just hard to totally deal with for good.
So let us get to learn more about this yeast infections. Yeast infections are generally caused by an organism called Candida albicans. Hence, a Candida infection is called Candidiasis. Contrary to what is thought to, there is no direct evidence that it is passed through an act of sexual intercourse.
Almost fifty percent of all healthy, sexually active women, and thirty percent of all pregnant women tested had Candida albicans which may indicate that sexual activity itself maybe the reason to the growth of Candida albicans.
Some factual information: Do you know that this harmful microorganism we are talking about, the Candida ablicans are a normal part of our body flora, so it is a natural inhabitant of our body. It is only when it reached uncontrolled growth that it can cause symptoms to appear in your body and can inflict harm. Thus it is potentially harmful normal inhabitant. Certain types of yeast in harmless amounts can be found in the:
* bowels / large intestines / anus * vagina * from your throat down to your small intestines * integument / skin * oral cavity / mouth
Under certain conditions, an overgrowth of yeast can occur. This happens when the natural balance of good bacteria and the harmful yeast microorganism are destroyed, basically allowing an overgrowth of the harmful yeasts. The balance can be destroyed by improper use of antibiotics (this kills the good bacteriabut not the yeasts), Diabetes mellitus, sex with an infected individual, immunocompromised state like HIV / AIDS and cancer. And these are not the only causes. When the imbalance happens, symptoms start to occur. Symptoms like extreme itching of the affected parts, swelling and redness, and pain.
Candida Yeast infection is not the only yeast infection you can have. Here is a list of other yeast or fungal infections.
* Moniliasis * Balanitis * Intertrigo * Thrush
A useful information – Yeast infections or fungal growths usually develop in a moist environment, That’s why you have to keep yourself clean and dry especially on these areas:
* external genitalia * finger and toe nails * webs of fingers and toes * folds of skin
