What Are Eyelash Extensions and What Are They Made Of?

Providing the same additional length and fullness as hair extensions for the head, eyelash extensions leave eyes looking more sultry and seductive. Minuscule, fibre-like extensions are delicately attached to lashes of the upper lids using a surgical strength adhesive. This gives a maximised, thicker lash effect and fuller line across the lid. This method is unlike the attachment of common strip lashes that you purchase in stores, as they provide a more natural appearance. This kind of extension can be worn 24 hours a day without removal, and is suitable for showering and swimming. Although they don’t have to be removed, oil from skin can damage the adhesive used and thus you should avoid contact if possible. Eyelash extensions are much more effective than the traditional strip lashes as they are applied one at a time to individual lashes. This procedure can take anywhere from two to three hours depending on the individual and a full set involves 30 to 80 false lashes per eye.

Extensions normally last from two weeks to two months, though it is dependent on the individual’s own cycle of hair growth. You can get many colours of lashes, including red, blue green and purple, though they are generally black. If you want to spend lots of money on the most lavish option available then you could opt for mink lashes, but because of both financial and ethical reasons, most people choose synthetic. The process originated in Japan several decades ago but took off amongst the masses in the early 1990’s. Since then, those in the fashion world have been taking advantage of this, as have celebrities and the upper classes. These include people such as Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Gwen Stefani and Lucy Liu. Since about 2000 it has been available at local level, with salons and spas in all cities and towns offering the process. Eyebrow extensions are another fun option but haven’t taken off to the same extent.

Eyelash extensions will come out as your own hair growth cycle moves (remember, the extensions are attached to your natural lashes). Only certified estheticians are allowed to perform extensions in some states, with beauty technicians allowed else where. In various countries no official training is needed, though most businesses prefer some kind of qualification. Prices depend on location and salon.

There is no set method for attaching eyelash extensions, with the method varying by technician. The basic procedure involves the selection of a synthetic lash to match the lash of the customer. The eyelashes are then separated using tweezers. The eyelash extension is then dipped into the adhesive and then attached. This is repeated until every lash has an extension. Re-application can be done as necessary, depending on the speed at which lashes fall out.

The Eyelash extension procedure is available at a number of locations, including salons, spas and clinics. This procedure shouldn’t be tried at home, as the results will be less than professional, and the delicate eye area could be damaged.
